MOSAIC TILES: STILL BRIGHT AND CLEAR AFTER NEARLY TWO THOUSAND YEARS

There are host of different  mosaic tile varieties available to the artist, with  an almost infinite range of colors, shapes and textures. If she chooses her materials well, the artist’s work could last for centuries and the mosaic tiles would still remain as bright and alive as the day the piece was completed and her creation will continue to give pleasure, long after her lifetime has passed.

Working with mosaic tiles is painstaking, even finicky, and calls for a very special talent. Planning it all out, step by step, is essential, as each individual mosaic tile (tessera) must be carefully chosen for shape, texture, sheen and  nuances of color tone before being glued or cemented into position. What is paramount is that the artist must always hold her concept of the final competed work firmly in her mind’s eye as the work progresses. She must then have the confidence to follow her gut felt instincts and not hesitate to position her mosaic tiles decisively and appropriately. Creating great mosaic art can only ever be a living thing and although a pattern may be drawn up as a guide, the mosaic process cannot be thought of as something akin to laying out a jigsaw puzzle or a “paint-by-numbers” exercise. The artistic instinct must always be allowed the space to express itself.  That said – remember that experience is always the best instructor and the would-be artist should be prepared to make her mistakes. Start with smaller projects and use the cheaper mosaic tiles – but the important thing is to get going right away.
