This is a question that cannot be easily answered in just a few lines. The word Mosaic signifies different things to different people. The artform can be expressed in many forms - an assembly of photo clippings, magnificently glowing stained glass panelling in a modern cathedral, a flickering background pattern on a computer screen, or centuries old pavements surrounding an ancient Roman temple where thousands of hard wearing miniscule stone blocks still tell tales of long forgotten gods and the men who once worshipped them .

The following is my best offering -

Mosaic is the technique of assembling tiny fragments of colour, light, texture and shading, of almost any material or source and combining them together in such a way that they are no longer viewed in their individual elements, but are merged into an integrated whole within the eye of the observer, evoking an image there that has recognisable meaning, form or pattern.
